People Matter, Things Don’t

Lilli, 13 years old, was in tears when I answered her call.

“Someone has stolen the scooter.”

Lilli had taken our Segway electric scooter to the plaza. The shops are her happy place. And since they’re 5kms away, the scooter is her passport to independence. Until now.

I paused. Electric scooters are expensive. She must not have locked it up correctly. This was her mistake. Plus, I was busy. Not only was this a costly mistake, it was inconvenient.

“Lilli, people matter; things don’t.”

“I’m so sorry Daddy.”

“I know. But know this. You matter so much more than a scooter. I love you. No matter what. Even when you lose a scooter… Do you want to walk home and clear your head and your emotions? Or would you prefer that I come and pick you up and cuddle you?”

We all make mistakes. Compassion when someone is suffering draws them to us. Lessons can be taught later. People matter. Things don’t.
